A ONE HOUR workshop to inform and encourage parents to TALK with their children about alcohol as well as, drug abuse.

Did you know that research shows that PARENTS are the #1 reason young people decide not to drink alcohol and use drugs?  Encouraging discussions (PLURAL!) - as early as possible - helps develop the “modern” brain and encourages good decisions vis-á-vis alcohol/drugs and the dangers they pose to the developing brain.  As children head toward teen years, they begin to develop their own opinions.  It is at this time that parents must begin the transition from “telling” them to “speaking with them” - in more “adult” ways.

This workshop will help parents understand the functions of the “primitive” and “modern” parts of the brain and how addiction “hijacks” the primal brain, and weakens the “modern” brain. Information presented will reiterate the importance of discussions about alcohol and drug abuse between parents & children and show parents HOW & WHY to treat kids as “adults” versus “children”.

In the ONE HOUR program parents will:

1.  View a 30 minute video “How Drugs Hijack The Brain”, third in a 12 lecture course titled “The Addictive Brain”, authored by Dr Thad Polk, Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan, published by The Great Courses and used under license held by Council Rock Coalition for Healthy Youth (CRCHY).

2.  Be presented with facts and data about local addiction conditions in the Council Rock community obtained through the Pennsylvania Youth Survey.*

3.  Be given Tips and “How To” information so parents have a better chance arming their children against the scourge of addiction

4.  Be provided with resources in the event one suspects a problem may already exist.

This program is sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with the Council Rock Coalition for Healthy Youth (CRCHY).

Instructor:  Stephen McGill, CRCHY

Registration is limited to the first 20 people signed up!  There is no Fee to attend but registration is encouraged.

*Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS)

Since 1989, the Commonwealth has conducted a survey of school students in the 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades to learn about their behavior, attitudes and knowledge concerning alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and violence. The ‘Pennsylvania Youth Survey,’ or PAYS, is sponsored and conducted every two years by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

The data gathered in PAYS serve two primary needs. First, the results provide school administrators, state agency directors, legislators and others with critical information concerning the changes in patterns of the use and abuse of these harmful substances and behaviors. Second, the survey assesses risk factors that are related to these behaviors and the protective factors that help guard against them. This information allows community leaders to direct prevention resources to areas where they are likely to have the greatest impact.
