Coding: Scratch and VEX Virtual Robotics

Scratch, developed by MIT, is the gold standard for learning coding. This software helps develop computational thinking skills, and it takes away the pressure of intimidating grammar and syntax. You will explore VEX Virtual Robotics to gain insight and understanding on topics such as navigation, more advanced AI, and solving real world style problems with data from sensors. More than just an introduction to programming, this begins the pathway to a fulfilling life-long journey of coding and design.

  • Create variables and if-else statements

  • Make programs with visual code

  • Experiment and explore to build creativity and confidence

  • Code virtual robots

Game Design: Roblox and Monetization
Roblox has millions of users signing in every month, and removes almost all the barriers to having your games and creations seen by other players. Students don't just have to imagine what a player will do, as they make creations they'll be able to build, test, and see players in real time experiencing their game. There's no better environment for testing your design and user-centric approach. For game design, there's also no better way to dip your feet into monetization, giving you the ability to get donations and see returns on the skills you're developing.

  • Create and publish games to the Roblox website

  • Develop and design an Obby

  • Learn game design best practices

  • Work with Lua scripts

Creative: Vector Art and Audio Design with Scratch (Chromebook-friendly)
Creativity is to see what is, and then make what could be, or will be. Early on, you don't need advanced software and complicated installations, all you need is Scratch. It was designed by MIT, and provides a vector editor and audio capture features right out of the box. Making your characters, stories, or even simple animated shorts jump off the screen is the name of the game. Record sounds, draw characters and backgrounds, and flex your creative muscles!

  • Create and edit audio tracks and characters

  • Make stories and worlds in 2D

  • Practice design and 2D animation/creative techniques
