Beginner Scarf Class
The Beginner Level Scarf Class is appropriate for someone new to knitting or a beginner looking to strengthen their skills.? Each class is one hour long and runs for six weeks.? A knitting pattern and all materials are included.? Students will learn how to cast on, knit, purl, read a pattern and chart, cast off, and block their knitting.?? 

Classes will begin with the instructor modeling and explaining a new skill.? Next, students are walked through the skill with instructor support.? Students then have time to work independently while the instructor comes around to assist.? Each class builds upon the previous class's skills.? Students are encouraged to practice each new skill at home to complete their scarf by the end of the six weeks. 

Instructor: Ann Albe 

Week 1

  • Students will learn to cast on and knit.
  • Students will be introduced to reading a knitting pattern.
  • Students are encouraged to knit 10 rows before the next class.

Week 2

  • Students will learn to purl.
  • Students will continue to learn to read a knitting pattern and understand the terms Stockinette Stitch and Reverse Stockinette Stitch.
  • Students are encouraged to work 6 rows of Stockinette Stitch and 6 rows of Reverse Stockinette Stitch.
  • The instructor will assist with any problems that arise. 

Week 3

  • Students will learn to put knits and purls together in a pattern.
  • Students will continue to learn to read a knitting pattern and a chart.
  • Students are encouraged to work 10 rows of this pattern.
  • The instructor will assist with any problems that arise. 

Week 4 & 5

  • Skills will be reviewed as necessary.
  • Students will continue to work on the skills taught with support from the instructor.
  • The instructor will assist with any problems that arise. 

Week 6

  • Students will learn to bind off their scarf.
  • Blocking will be discussed and demonstrated.

General Information
  • Early Resident Savings –(ERS) Northampton Residents registering at least one week prior to the start date of the program will pay the Early Resident Savings Fee (ERS). The ERS fee is not listed below, but will appear during the checkout process. Mail in registrations must be postmarked at least one week prior to the start of the class in order to receive this savings.
