Art Goes to Japan is a creative, cultural art series that introduces students to traditional Japanese art forms through hands-on exploration and play. Young artists will discover the beauty of ink, paper, water, texture, and nature while learning about Japanese artistic traditions and techniques.
Projects include:
Sumi-e — Japanese ink painting using expressive brushwork and simple natural forms where you can grind your own ink!
Gyotaku — the traditional art of fish printing (replicas - not real animals)
Suminagashi — “floating ink” marbling created by swirling ink patterns on water
Momigami — a Japanese paper-texturing technique that transforms paper into soft, wrinkled surfaces for collage and mixed media art (uses plant oils and lotions)
Chigiri-e — torn paper collage art using layered handmade and textured papers to create expressive images and landscapes
Students will experiment with movement, observation, and composition while creating unique works of art inspired by Japanese culture. This class encourages creativity, mindfulness, and curiosity in a fun and welcoming environment. No experience necessary.
$20 materials fee due to instructor the first day of class.
